Perhaps this has happened to you… your beloved smartphone took the infamous swim in the toilet. Or perhaps while juggling a dozen things and getting into the car, you inadvertently left your brand-new tablet on the roof.
If so, fear not: this has happened to just about everybody. Read below for some real-world misfortunes that have similarly befallen beloved electronic devices.
So, mine is more unfortunate than funny, but I guess I’ll share.Back when I had an iPhone 5, I had to go to a work event one night that I didn’t really want to go to, and as I was getting out of the car, I dropped my naked iPhone, shattering the screen. I spent the rest of the evening silently fuming and probably wasn’t very good company. The 5s had just been released and I was able to get an upgrade, so I went ahead and ordered myself one. My daughter still had an iPhone 4, so she got my 5 with the cracked screen. I got her a Lifeproof case and you could hardly tell it was cracked
. I promised repeatedly that I would get around to getting it fixed, but that never happened.
As the launch of the 6 was approaching, she became more and more excited that she would get my 5s and not have to have a phone with a cracked screen any more. Then, the night before my new iPhone arrived, I was leaving the house to get pizza. My wife had just bought a new car, and I grabbed her spare key as my car was in the garage while her’s was in the drive. I was standing at the front door when I noticed the dealer tag was still hanging from the spare key. So, holding the spare key in my left hand and my iPhone in my right, I grabbed hold of the dealer tag and pulled. And pulled. And then I pulled some more. The dealer tag snapped, I lost hold of my iPhone and basically hurled it at the ground as hard as I could. The screen shattered into a hundred pieces, and I was incandescent with rage. The next day while I was at work with my new iPhone 6,
my wife took my iPhone 5s to a local store, where they undid my stupidity for the low cost of $120. Still, I had my new phone, and my daughter finally had a phone without a cracked screen. All was right with the world. Until two days later, when she dropped her newly-repaired iPhone and cracked the screen.
In one store in Oklahoma
Me: “Hi! How can I help you today?”
Customer: “I would like to purchase a laptop but want to customize it a little bit.”
Me: “Okay, great I can help you with that!” (I pulled up her account, pull up the laptop that she wants to customize.)
Customer: “Okay, I want 3gb of memory, 160gb hard-drive, oh and also, can you please move the ‘delete’ key next to the space bar? I hate having to go to the top of the keyboard to press that.”
Story # 3
– (I work in a technology help desk fixing computers. A preteen girl brings in her laptop. The entire left side is damaged, and quite badly.)
– Girl: “My laptop isn’t working and I don’t know why.”
– Me: “Well, it may have to do with the damage on the side.”
– Girl: “What damage?”
Me: “The entire left side of your laptop is smashed up.”
– Girl: *surprised* “Oh! When did that happen?”
– Me: “Have you dropped it recently?”
– Girl: “Well, yeah, I’m really klutzy, so I tend to drop it out of my car when I go to school.”
– Me: “Okay. Well, we can take a look at it and try to fix it for you so your laptop works again. In the future, try not to drop your laptop so much.”
– Girl: “Oh, is it bad to drop it a lot?”

You work hard and spend countless hours on your laptop. Criminals are working just as hard to gain access to your PC and sensitive data. Criminals constantly seek out vulnerable laptop users to access their confidential files and steal their sensitive data.
These unscrupulous, savvy individuals can be prevented from inappropriately accessing your laptop and stealing your data with a few preventive measures. Here are several simple ways to secure your laptop.
Install Tracking Software
Tracking software is a tool that can track the movement of your laptop if accessed by unauthorized users. The software takes pictures of the individual using the computer periodically.
It gets the job done by tracking IP addresses, the computer’s webcam, and Wi-fi position info to monitor its movement. It allows you to freeze your computer and wipe files remotely once activated.
Back Up Your Data
Storing files on an external hard drive protects your sensitive data. Performing periodic backups ensures that files are accessible and easily restored if theft occurs.
Investing in an external hard drive accomplishes the same thing as investing in a cloud storage solution. Files can be accessed if the computer is damaged or stolen.
Don’t Store Passwords
It doesn’t matter how many obscure punctuation marks your password has if your computer automatically remembers all of your passwords. Be wary of using password-management programs such as LastPass on anything that could be stolen (it’s okay to stick LastPass on your 40-pound desktop, if you wish). You should also refrain from typing all of your passwords into a plain-text file on your computer.
If you lose your laptop, you should still take the precautionary measure of changing all of the passwords to your online accounts, just in case something slipped through the cracks.
Protect Your Laptop
The laptop carrying sensitive data should be secured. This is especially important if a person is one the road and travels frequently. Taking additional steps to secure files and the laptop itself as well as using secure connections could prevent data theft or data loss.
