Help…my hard drive needs head repair!
The heads inside your hard drive are just like a needle on a record player, except magnetic. Also unlike your record player, a hard drive can have multiple heads, since it needs one for each platter inside a hard drive. The bigger the drive, the more platters, and so the more heads it will have.
Hard drive heads can fail for a number of reasons:
- A strong bump can knock the heads of alignment
- A magnetic field can pull the heads out of place
- Too many bad sectors can blow out the heads, just like too many scratches can wear out a record player needle
If the heads on your hard drive fail, they can continue to do more and more damage as you keep using your drive. In order to avoid potentially destroying all of your data, make sure that you get your hard drive heads as soon as you suspect there might be a problem.
